National Fishing Week paves the way to a lifetime of adventure

Every year many people visiting NFW events leave with a desire to keep fishing.

National Fishing Week recently got to hear of the adventures of  Thomas Mee who has been on many fishing adventures with his dad and granddad since visiting an NFW event.

While Thomas’ dad Tim takes him fishing at weekends, he has been secretly practising after school on a Thursday evening with Granddad Mike.  Now aged five and armed with his new whip plus a bit of help from Mike, Thomas has bagged up on Perch, Roach, Bream, Crucian carp and even a 3lb Tench!

Thomas said, ”My record is 46 Perch and Roach, one was really, really big! When I’m bigger I want to fish in a boat with my daddy and Uncle Dave and catch a big pike or a shark.”

Mike added:  “ I remember when I was young my father took me to local ponds and the river Ancholme to catch roach; now it’s my turn to enjoy spending time teaching Thomas to fish and learn about the environment around him. And I’m re-discovering the fun of going coarse fishing too.  When we started fishing it was ‘When are we going home?’ now it’s ’How long can we stay for?  Can we catch just one more Granddad?”   We would like to thank all those at National Fishing Week for helping us go fishing and have quality time together.”   Do you know of a similar tale? Free Fishing during National Fishing Week

As many experienced organisers are aware, the Environment Agency each year provide free rod licences for any events being staged under the National Fishing Week banner, and this year is no different.

So for any individual, or group of people who may wish to organise an event for the first time, please be aware of some of the following important points;

  1. The EA provide the free Rod Licence for all participants
  2. British Waterways will waive the cost of a day ticket if an event is being staged on their waters. ( Prior permission however must have been agreed)
  3. Many fisheries will often be prepared to agree a 'Special Deal'
  4. We as organisers will supply help to assist your events or to keep novices fishing afterwards

Therefore if you are considering hosting an event for the first time, let us suggest the following course of action;

  1. Download an organiser pack and read through it
  2. Contact anyone you know who may have previously organised an event and ask their advice
  3. Still unsure then send an email to info@nationalfishingweek.co.uk with any further questions.

National Fishing Week helps attract greater numbers!

The organisers of this six week festival of fishing are quick to point out that greater involvement has been sought from the game & sea fishing sectors of the industry.

Over the past 15 years, many clubs and societies have used NFW as their main source of new membership. Last year alone, one angling club succeeded in achieving 114 new members as a result of an open weekend, for a anyone who wished to give angling a go.

They did this by offering 'free membership' for the rest of the year, and encouraged the 'converted' to use the waters as often as possible.

And what do you know? Over 80% of the 'converts' are now fully paid up members this year!!!

This must surely be food for thought, or to coin a phrase, 'the Spratt to catch the Makerel'.

NFW seeks more organisers from the Game & Sea sectors of the industry.

Game & Sea fishing events are very much a priority of the organisers of this years National Fishing Week.

Each year we appear to grow in numbers, and both the ST & A and the NFSA fully support this campaign.

So if you are from either of these sectors and wish to get involved then do not hesitate in contacting us.

If you support what we are doing, then why not send us a link to your website?

If you click on the supporters page you can send us a link directly to and from this website. What a way of communicating with the public. Dedicate some of your website to National Fishing Week and tell those who may wish to attend your event this year, a little bit more about it! (We reserve the right to refuse)
